History

Officially existed in October 24, 1945, however used by president Franklin Roosevelt during the WWI, to fend off the Axis Powers, replaced League of Nations.

Organization

Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish are the official languages of the U.N.

cunr.org: The U.N called to resolve disputes but countries can ignore rulings from the U.N.

Its headquarters are localed in Manhattan, New York and there are 192 member states at each present time.

The U.N. has five different sub committees: The General Assembly, The Security Council, The Economic and Social council, the Secretariat, and the International Court of justice.
Each committee serves a different purpose in the U.N, functioning separately and also together to help create a stable and supportive international environment.

Meetings are at regular intervals to discuss world events and meeting are in environment when necessary. The U.N. is called to help negotiate relationships between countries when countries cannot do it themselves.

Vietnam Information
Background: Vietnam was conquered by France from 1858 to 1884. In 1887 it became part of French Indochina. After WWII it became independent but was still ruled under the French government until 1954 where communist forces defeated them under Ho Chi Minh. Vietnam was divided into the communist North and anti-communist South. The US military aided the South in 1960s to bolster the government, but eventually withdrew. 2 years later the north took over the south and reunited the country under Communist rule. Through the country was in peace, it had no major advancements in trading/economy (poor economy). In 1986, the government set up a policy called the "doi moi" (renovation) to increase economic liberalization and enacted structural reforms to modernize the economy and produce a more competitive, export-driven industries. The Communist leaders maintain control on political expression and have resist to outside calls to improve human rights. The country has many small-scale protest from various groups.
Area: 331,210 sq km
Natural resources: Phosphates, coal manganese, rare earth elements, bauxite, chromate, offshore oil and gas deposits, timber, hydro-power.
Environment: Deforestation and soil degradation, water pollution and overfishing, ground water contamination, and a rapidly degrading environment in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The elections happen every five years by the National Assembly from its members.

Economy: Vietnam is a densely-populated developing country that has recovered from the ravages of war, loss of financial support from the old Soviet, and rigidities of centrally-planned economy in the last 30 years. Deep poverty has significantly declined. The global recession has hurt Vietnam's exporting oreinted economy with less than a GDP 7%. The government has used stimuli money to spend on a subsidized lending program through the financial crisis.
Illicit Drugs: The Government has faced a domestic opium/heroin/meth-amphetamine addiction problems despite, long lasting crackdowns.

AIDS and HIV
At the end of 2009,
The estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDS is 280,000.
The estimated number of women living with HIV/AIDS is 81,000.
The estimated adult HIV prevalence is 0.4%.
Estimated number of AIDS-related deaths 14,000.
The HIV epidemic has shown signs of stability.
HIv prevalence has declined in the most affected groups.
18% of injecting drug users live with HIV compared to 29% in 2004.
Even with the significantly increase in antiretroviral therapy coverage, only 34% are received treatment.

HIV in Viet Nam

Viet Nam’s HIV epidemic is still in a concentrated phase, with the highest sero-prevalence among key populations at higher risk. These include injecting drug users (IDUs), female sex workers (FSWs) and men who have sex with men (MSM). Prevalence in the general population is estimated at 0.53%. According to the 2005 Estimation and Projection Report, there were an estimated 293,000 people living with HIV in 2007.
